The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), located in Karachi, Sindh province, is one of Pakistan’s premier research organizations. It was founded in 1961 with the help of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The NIO’s mission is to conduct fundamental and applied research on marine and coastal ecosystems; manage coastal resources; provide scientific support for ocean governance; and promote awareness of the value of oceans.
